We are living in a world that is growing in population and using natural resources faster than we are able to sustain them. Throughout history, most people have assumed that these resources were limitless. Thomas Malthus, a clergyman in England, proclaimed in 1791 that the geometric growth of population would eventually outstrip the linear growth of food production, bringing on worldwide famine. Since then, pessimists have predicted global doom, and optimists have relied on technological innovation to head it off. Despite famines and plagues in places around the world brought on by both natural and man-made causes, advances of technology have been able to avoid the cataclysm Malthus forecast. Technology, however, has increased the appetites of an ever-growing population to consume a dwindling supply of natural resources. The ability to put us on the path to sustaining world resources may be the greatest challenge facing the generation of college students today.
